Death of Edmund Goldring: Whitby, (Special) - Member of a family of sailors at one time known from one end of the lakes to the other, Captain Emund "Ted" Goldring, died last night in Oshawa General Hospital following a brief illness. He was in his 80th year.

Master of the schooner Northwest for more than 30 years, Captain Goldring knew Port Whitby when it was Port Windsor, and vessels mostly in the sand and gravel trade filled the harbor. He retired to his Port Whitby home 35 years ago.

He was one of four brothers, all sailors. Frank sailed with him on the Northwest, Charles and Richard had the Maple Leaf, and later Charles commanded the Rapid City. A half-brother, John sailed the J. J. Pugsley, later rebuilt as the Helen. Other vessels linked with the sailing history of the Goldring boys are the M. A. Hall, once owned and sailed by Captain Maurice Fitzgerald of Oakville, and the H. M. Ballou.

Of the brothers, only Frank and Richard, both still living at Port Whitby, survive. Their Father's small home on the Etobicoke Flats, near the mouth of the Etobicoke Creek, was their birthplace, buy they all spent the greater part of their lives at Port Whitby.

Captain Goldring leaves two sons, Frank, Winnipeg and Ralph, Mount Dennis and two daughters, Mrs. W. Van Cleaf, Scottish Springs, Ontario and Mrs. Samuel Thorndyke, Port Whitby. Dr. C. C. Goldring, superintendent of public schools, Toronto, is a nephew.

He was a staunch adherent of historic St John's Chruch, Port Whitby. one of the oldest churches in the district.

Funeral of Edmund Goldring: Whitby, (Special) - Edmund "Ted" Goldring, veteran sailor and Great Lakes Captain and member of one of Whitby's best known families, who died at the Oshawa General Hospital Thursday night (Feb. 18) was laid to rest in the historic St John's Church at Port Whitby this afternoon, following a service in the little Anglican Church which borders it and with which he had long been connected.

The service, conducted by Reverend Douglas Langford, rector, was largely attended, many coming to pay their last respects to one who was so highly regarded in the community. Previous to three o'clock a private service was held at the family residence on Maitland Street. Pall bearers were relatives and old friends of the captain. There were many floral tributes.

Captain Edmund Goldring was in his 80th year when he sailed for his last port. In the early days of Whitby's history, he and his brother Frank were partners and owners of the two-masted schooner Northwest, which still lies in the harbor at Midland. He come to Whitby from Toronto about 40 years ago, and he and his brother were engaged for the most part in hauling stone and gravel to Toronto. They had been on the lakes since early in life. "Ted" retired about 17 years ago.

Captain Goldring took a keen interest in the S. John's Anglican Church, Port Whitby, and was largely instrumental in having a basement dug many years ago. and which now also serves as a parish hall.

Surviving are tow sons, Ralph of Mount Dennis and Frank of Winnipeg and two daughters, Mr. J. Van Cleaf of Scottish Springs, Ontario and Mrs. Samuel Thorndyke, of Port Whitby; also two brothers, Richard and Frank, of Port Whitby. Dr. C. C. Goldring, Supervisor of Toronto Schools, Reverend Norman Goldring, of Creemore and Reverend Frank Goldring, Lindsay, are nephews, and there are several nieces.
