    • Former Postmistress Olive Goldring Dies: Whitby (Staff)
Miss Olive E. A. Goldring, a lifelong resident of Port Whitby, and postmistress at the Goldring Store from 1922 to 1967 died Monday at the Oshawa General Hospital at the age of 79. Daughter of the late Captain Richard Goldring, and Harriet Ann Swan, she was born at the family home at 1750 Dufferin St Port Whitby in 1895. Miss Goldring's Father was one of the last captains of sailing vessels on Lake Ontario, and had a fleet of stone hookers which operated out of Whitby Harbor in the 1890's and early 1900's. He would often provide his boats for excursions to Niagara Falls and other points on the lake. He moved to Whitby with his family from Toronto in 1890 and in 1911, retired from the sailing profession to manage the old Jackson grocery store at Brock and Victoria Streets. Miss Goldring began working with her Father and brothers in the store at the age of 15 and served as Postmistress for Port Whitby from 1922 to 1967 when the store was closed and demolished.

On retiring in 1967, Canada's Postmaster General, Jean Pierre Cote, presented her with a certificate for 45 years of service, at a dinner in Niagara Falls. Throughout her term of office, Miss Goldring attended post office conventions throughout Canada. Miss Goldring was a long time member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and a member of the Whitby Historical Society. She provided the historical society with many photographs and documents related to her family and the history of Port Whitby. Miss Goldring was also a life long member of St John's Anglican Church, Port Whitby, and was very active in the AYPA, WA, Sunday School choir and Chancel Guild. She was president of the Chancel Guild at the time of her death.

She is survived by two sister, Mr. William Kirby (Adelaide), Niagara on the Lake, and Mrs. C. S. Evans (Bertha) of Whitby. Brothers John, Percival, Earnest and Reverend Norman Goldring, and a sister Ema died previously. Miss Goldring is at the W. C. Town Funeral Chapel, Dundas St E., Whitby, where she will remain until 11 am Wednesday. Visiting hours are 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm today. The funeral service will be conducted by Reverend Raymond J. Carder at St John's Anglican Church at 2 pm Wednesday, followed by interment in St John's Cemetery.

"Olive, as she was so warmly known by young and old was young in heart, had a keen sense of humor and a loving concern for all around her" said Mrs. John McKibbin, a close friend and Wife of a former rector of St John's Church.
