    3. [S566] Obituary, 1911_839_34.
Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser - 12 July 1911 Death of Mr J. B. Balfour We regret to announce the death of Mr J. B. Balfour, merchant, who passed away on Friday forenoon last, after a long and painful illness. As a young man Mr Balfour came from Jedburgh to take up the business that has been with the exception of a short interval since associated with his name. An enthusiastic bowler he was secretary of the Old Town Bowling Club, and did much on its behalf, actively interested in its welfare and ever eager to record its success in matches and tournaments. As a mark of respect the green was closed for play on Friday and Saturday. He was an ardent student of horticulture, and for very many years held the important position as President of Langholm Horticultural Society. As an honorary member of Langholm Football Club, Mr Balfour took a keen interest in its affairs, and had the honour of opening the Club's new field at Milntown when play was transferred from the Castleholm. Music too was his passion. Gifted with a deep rich bass voice, he was ever willing to dedicate his musical abilities to public service. The local
