This is an Anglicized form of three distinct Gaelic (Irish) surnames. The first, "O'Seanain" with the cognate "MacGiolla tSeanain", translates as "descendant of the follower of St. Senan". St. Senan was a 6th Century Irish abbot-bishop who settled on Scattery Island in the Shannon Estuary. These names normally Anglicized as (Mac)Giltenan in Counties Wexford and Carlow, became Shannon in Co. Clare. A second West Clare name "O'Sionain", originally given to a worker with straw (i.e. a maker of straw baskets, straw festival garments, etc.), is rendered Shinane or Shannon in English. Finally, "O'Seannachain", a Dalcassian (Munster) surname is Anglicized both as Shannahan and Shannon. The Gaelic prefix "O" indicates "male descendant of", plus the personal name "Seannachain" from "Seain", old and senior. Prior to the 14th Century, the chief of the last mentioned clan held territory between Bodyke and Feakle in Co. Clare. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of O' Seannachain, a chief of the name, which was dated 1318, in the "History of Delcassian (Co. Clare) Clans", during the reign of King Edward 11 of England, known as "Edward of Caernafon", 1307 - Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.1327.

    • Warner and Beers History of Brant 1883 Page 679 JOHN SHANNON (deceased) was one of the pioneer farmers of South Dumfries Township. He was born in Copetown, Ontario, 31st August, 1806, and his parents David and Jane Shannon, who carried on farming occupations, were natives of New Brunswick, from which province they moved to Copetown, where they resided until the death of David. The widow and family then moved into Dumfries, where she died. John, of whom this sketch is written, was united in marriage, 6th December, 1837, with Francis Goldring, daughter of James and Sarah Goldring, natives of England. Frances was born in that country, 12th February, 1817, and emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1832, when they settled in Toronto. Mr. Shannon was an adherent of the Methodist Church, and his widow is a member of the same body. He was educated at a common School, and when he started he bought 100 Acres on which the widow and family now reside. He was looked upon in his life-time as one of the best and most successful farmers in Brant. Mr. and Mrs. Shannon had a family of ten children, seven of whom survive, viz., Sarah J., Wife of William Laughlan; Ellen, Wife of David Curry; James, married; John, married; Frances A.; Joseph, married; and George. Edward, who was born 11th July, 1863, died 2nd May, 1880. George, the youngest son living, is at home, and manages the Farm, and Frances A. assists her mother in the domestic duties of the homestead.
