Recorded in the spellings of Davis, Davies, Davie, Davy, and others, this is a patronymic surname of Hebrew origins, and much associated with Wales. It means 'the son of David', from the Hebrew male given name meaning "beloved". The name is not recorded in any part of Britain before the Norman Conquest of 1066, and is regarded as being a 'Crusader' introduction. In the 12th century all the parts of Christendom joined in expeditions to free the Holy Land from the infidel. Although all the crusades were militarily unsuccessful, and have remained so to this day, the returning soldiers 'adopted' certain biblical and Greek names, of which David was one, and gave them to their children, particularly their sons. Amongst the very earliest recordings of the given name predating the surnames is that of 'Dauid clericus', (David, the clerk), in the rolls of the county of Lincoln for the year 1150, whilst Richard Davy appears in the Subsidy rolls of Worcester for the year 1275. Further examples include Thomas Dayson in the 1327 Pipe Rolls of Yorkshire, and Richard Davys is listed in the Register of the Freemen of the City of York for the year 1402. An interesting bearer of the name was Sir Thomas Davies (1631 - 1680), a bookseller, who became master of the Stationer's Guild in 1668 and was Lord Mayor of London in 1666, during the Great Fire of London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Dauisse, which was dated 1327, in the Subsidy Rolls of the county of Cambridgeshire, during the reign of King Edward 111, known as "The Father of the Navy", 1327 - 1377. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Notes - He was a Farmer and lived in Barkway, Ontario, Canada. In the late 1800'S (after 1872) Ira Davy moved to Lewisham, Ontario, Canada near the town of Barkway. During this period there was a large logging bonanza in the Muskoka District and it is believed that is why they He moved there. From the Guide Book and Atlas of Muskoka and Perry Sound Districts Ira DAVIE is shown to have two properties in Ryde, being Lot 16 Concession XI and Lot 6 Concession VIII The first Lot is near that of Henry Long and Joshua Long (Joshua was the first settler in Ryde, he settled there after 1872). As Ira married Charlotte Ann Long and her Father was John Long and they married before arriving in Lewisham, it is not known if the Long's that already reside are related and may have suggested that they move there. The logging boom did not last and at one time Ira had a store in Barkway, which was not in his possession in the early 1900's, and he was not the owner of record at that time.
Ira and Charlotte are both buried in the Cemetery nearest to Barkway, next to the Garter Snake Creek. Their daughter Ruth is buried in the Cemetery, approx ½ mile west of their Cemetery and her headstone is engraved Ruth DAVEY.
Today there is only a few hunting cabins and a Cemetery in Lewisham but during the logging boom the population was in excess of 2, 000. The property now is a mix of swamp and scrub timber and was swept by a forest fire in the late 1980's clearing a large area, which is now occupied by moose and deer.
Came to Ryde in 1874 to a land grant which was to have had a shanty on it but it was in such poor condition Ira built a log cabin. He worked at logging and was a good carpenter. The log home and barn are still standing and inhabited. The log part of the house is now covered with siding and a new kitchen has been added and a sun porch. He carried mail in the area for many years. Charlotte always had flowers blooming near her door and was especially fond of pansies and roses. She had a big spinning wheel and every spare moment was spent spinning. She moved the spinning wheel to the best location so she could see her flowers in the yard as she worked. They had 7 children.
