Notes - MRS EMILY SAUNDERS Passes Away at Her Home in This City After A Long and Useful Life
One of Bloomfield's Oldest Residents Passes Peacefully Away at the Advanced Age of Nearly Eighty
Mrs. Emily Waterman Saunders, one of the oldest and most beloved ladies of Bloomfield, passed away at her home in this city, Saturday, October 29, 1904, at the advanced age of 79 years, 4 months and 28 days.
Mother Saunders had been in declining health for several years and of late was seen to be sinking fast. All her children had been summoned home and were at her bedside when the final summons came.
Emily Waterman Saunders was born May 31, 1825, near the city of Columbus, Ohio. When but about ten years of age she came to Iowa with her parents who located in Van Buren County. Two years later they came to Davis, where she resided up to the time of her death.
Her residence in Davis County covers a period of about 67 years. Thus she witnessed the passing of two generations since she came to this state.
She was married to S. L. Saunders in 1844, and to them were born nine children, six sons and three daughters. The first born, a daughter, died in infancy. The rest of the children attained manhood and womanhood before death entered their ranks. The Father and Husband and four of the sons have preceeded the mother to the spirit world; two sons and two daughters survive the mother; Limon and Willard and Mrs. Tom Davis of Bloomfield and Mrs. Flo Ehrlick of Webster City, Iowa, all of whom were present to pay their last tribute of respect, though sad, to the mother.
In her early married life the deceased united with the Christian Church, then meeting at the Star School house, afterwards coming to Bloomfield she united with the congregation in this place, where she has since held her membership. She has seen discord in the life of these congregations, and yet she lived to see out of these discords the Church rise and take a new life. In the midst of life's trials, whether within or without the Church, she always recognized above all a Savior who could hold and sustain her.
She had been prepard to go and had often remarked to her pastor that she could not understand why she was left to linger so long when there was nothing left for her to do.
The funeral services were held from her late residence Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. D. A. Wickizer.
