  Hattie appears in the 1910 and 1920 Federal Census as an inmate of the psychiatric hospital in Grand Traverse, Michigan. In the 1930 Federal Census she was living with her daughter Clara and her son-in-law George B. Patnode. In the 1940 Federal Census she was living with her widowed daughter Clara as part of a sizable family. The Michigan Death Index shows her death address as 1606 N. Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, Michigan. She seems to have recovered from her mental problem by 1930 and remained out of institutions for the rest of her life. During the time she was institutionalized, most of her family moved to the state of Washington. Hattie came from illustrious lineage. The Babcock name traces back to the earliest settlements in America and to the Revolutionary War patriot, David Babcock. Through marriage the family connects with the Plantagenet kings of England, to the De Valois who were kings of France and to Ruric of Kiev who is known as "the Father of Russia".
