Hi, You are looking for facts, and I have some. And also some opinions. Henry Purchase is not listed in the 1840 Michigan, USA Federal census. Henry and Elizabeth first show up in the 1850 Michigan, USA census. It reads:
Henry 38 England
Elizabeth 36 do.
Ann 9 do.
Miriam 10 do. I thought her age was 16; it is actually 10.
Elizabeth 4 do.
Sarah 2 do. Opinion: All 6 of these people were born in England
Henry Purchase and Elizabeth Hardy married in England in 1839. Their first child, Anna, was born there late that same year.
Their next children, Miriam and Elizabeth, were born in Ontario.
Then along comes Sarah, born in 1847. We had shown either England or Ontario as her birthplace. The 1851 census says Canada as her birth place. And somewhere I wrote that the 1871 and 1881 census also said that she was born in Ontario. The USA-Michigan 1850 census lists all the children as born in England. That is obviously wrong. Well, maybe not obvious, but I don't believe the 1850 census for birthplaces.
The 1850 Michigan census says that George Purchase, their last child on that census, age 2, was also born in England. The 1851 Ontario census says that George Edward Purchase, age 2 at next birthday, was born in Canada. Both birthplaces are wrong. He was born in Detroit, as we learned from a later census. I just don't remember which one.
Four more kids were born after that, all in Ontario - I believe.
In the 1871 Ontario census, Henry and Elizabeth Purchase, daughter Ann Purchase Hunter, and daughter Sarah Purchase Hewitt are listed as born in England. Opinion: Daughters Ann, Elizabeth and Sarah were all born in England. Not sure about Miriam's birthplace.
Now it gets sticky. In the 1881 Ontario census, Elizabeth Purchase Burgess, age 33, and Sarah Purchase Hewitt, age 32, are both listed as born in Ontario. Opinion: I don't believe it! At least Ann Purchase Hunter, age 43 (sic), still acknowledged her birthplace as England.
I wonder about Elizabeth (nee Hardy) Purchase and the 1834 immigration date. Crank up your magnifier, and see if that might be 1854, instead. Henry Purchase is listed on the 1854 Michigan, USA state census, but no image is available.
The 1900 U. S. census is the first year to ask people when they immigrated. There is no way to tell if they had lived in Canada before they moved to Michigan, USA from these censuses.
Opinion: I don't think that Henry Purchase's immigration date to either the U. S. or Canada can be inferred from Edith Arnott's tree. Henry was 19 years old in 1832. I believe that he married Elizabeth Hardy in England and had four children there. Further, I believe that he (they) moved from England to Michigan, USA in about 1849 or 1850. No stop in Canada
Some of this information will not agree with stuff I told you a year ago. I'm a year older, and smarter now. Another opinion.
Edward Purchase should be listed as George Edward Purchase, born October, 1850, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA.
Now for you: there is price to pay for all this stuff. Your task is to find Miriam Speedie, her Husband, and their offspring. You came across her name once before, but I don't remember what the circumstances were. Lots of luck. I put stuff in the mail to you today. I had to fill out a customs sheet. Warm regards, Charlie. (Note from Sandi. took me 2 days to find Speedie. damn I'm good)
